Why is an industrial battery interesting for my business?
If you have solar panels and return some of the power generated back to the grid, an industrial battery can help you harness more of your own energy. The extent of the effect depends on your remaining energy consumption and amount of power you return.
Important: the energy going to the battery is not returned to the grid at that moment. This means you will not receive feed-in compensation for this. The benefit is mainly in the difference between the purchase price (€/MWh) and feed-in compensation (€/MWh).
Peak shaving means that companies level out peaks in their electricity consumption by using energy from a battery during peak times. Many energy suppliers charge extra based on the highest peaks in consumption (capacity tariff). By reducing these peaks, your additional expenses drop significantly.
Using a battery therefore results in lower and predictable energy costs, less load on the grid and more sustainable energy consumption for your business.
Does your company have a dynamic energy contract? With an industrial battery, you can strategically decide when to draw energy from the grid, avoiding the more expensive times of day.
Energy prices for the next 24 hours are usually known around noon the previous day. The battery’s smart algorithm then automatically determines the most economical option.
The grid frequency in Europe is 50 Hz and must be kept within strict limits to ensure grid stability. In Belgium, Elia monitors this frequency. When there is excess energy on the grid, the frequency rises, which can be harmful. Conversely, a lack of energy leads to a decrease in frequency.
With an industrial battery, your company can help stabilise this frequency through Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR). This means making the battery’s power available to Elia at certain times, so that it can quickly draw or release energy to keep the grid frequency within safe margins. By clustering your battery with other batteries, they can act more efficiently together and maximise returns. At the same time, you retain the flexibility to use the battery for your own purposes and remain independent of the energy supplier.
