The smart battery system, with a capacity of 100 kW, can be used in various ways to maximize efficiency:

  • Increasing self-consumption: Excess green electricity generated by the solar panels is stored in the battery for later use, such as on less sunny days. In this way, the Spiessens scrap yard prevents locally produced green electricity from flowing back into the grid, which yields significant savings on their energy bill.
  • Smoothing out consumption peaks: The customer’s consumption peaks are smoothed out by using electricity from the battery during peak times. This is important to avoid a high capacity charge.
  • Participation in the imbalance market: the battery’s capacity was also made available to Luminus, which can remotely charge and discharge the battery at Schroothandel Piessens in a smart and flexible manner. When there is a surplus of electricity—for example, due to reduced industrial consumption on weekends or when there is an unexpected abundance of sun or wind—the battery is charged. Conversely, when there are shortages—for example, due to unexpectedly low levels of sun or wind—electricity from the battery at Schroothandel Piessens is used to feed power into the grid. In this way, the battery contributes to the stability of the power grid, and Piessens Scrap Metal gains even greater financial benefit from its battery.
